Peri-Peri Original – LU3 1JS
It was a cold day and after a dismal time watching Luton football club play, my friends and I decided on some comfort food post game, this led us to one of the back streets of Luton and to a restaurant which was flooded with cars and many people queuing almost outside the entrance, if it was good enough for them it was good enough for us.
Firstly, it seemed as if a house had been converted into a restaurant, with its bold colours of green and red, the restaurant stood out among the housing estate. The bold colours of the exterior matched the interior with the brightly coloured sofas and elements of grey to keep the restaurant up-to date.
The menu was well lit, and the various items were clearly displayed, it was straightforward and uncomplicated, to my approval there weren’t too many or too little items on the menu.
I ordered a Double Burger meal which came to a total of £6.38 – very reasonable priced I thought so far. We sat upstairs and waited for our call through a speaker to collect our food. The meal arrived in the space of approximately 10 minutes to my delight as I was starving. Furthermore, the meal was very appealing from appearance as the plate was stacked with a large sized burger and what seemed like a mountain of fries that were piping hot. The burger consisted of a soft floured ciabatta style bap, 2 marinated Peri chicken breasts, a slice of cheese with subtle hints of lettuce and mayonnaise.
The burger was dripping in the marinade and on the first bite gave the burger a unique and exquisite flavour as the sauce worked well with the soft, large and juicy chicken breasts which also had a fiery kick due to the spice. The burger bun was soft with touches of flour and worked well with the patty as the bread was fresh. The added extras complimented the burger and the mayonnaise added to the flavour and helped to combat and balance the spices of the burger. The fries were hot, crispy and the right size to pack a punch. The best part was the complimentary garlic and chilli sauce which were delightful when drenched on top of the fries.
To summarise, the experience was very pleasant, the meal was a good size with high quality and flavour that I still remember to this day. The slight criticism was the location could have used elements of wood to make the location feel more like home. Ironic given the fact we were surrounded by a housing estate. I feel that Peri-Peri Original was an updated and larger portion size of a Nando’s. Would I come here again? Very likely as the food was very good and filled me up.
